African School to Benefit from a Technology Competition in Tempe
So, what happens to the computers when teams compete in a build the fastest computer contest as part of the Avnet Tech Games ? Ship them to Africa, of course! Following the Avnet Tech Games on April 10, 2010, Avnet will donate three of the computers built to Huruma Children’s Home in Ngong, Kenya. Several others will be donated to Sanborn Elementary School in Chandler, Arizona and to the Workshop for Youth & Families in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Huruma is an orphanage, founded by Mama Zipporah, which helps more than 150 children from surrounding areas in the Kajiado District and Nirobi’s Kibera Slum. Huruma also offers the children an education through the Ngong Huruma Primary School that was also founded by Zipporah.
Robert Newell, engineering manager for Avnet’s integration center, visited the children’s home and primary school where he became well aware of their technology needs. Newell was familiar with the Avnet Tech Games and saw an opportunity to help out the school. He drafted a proposal letter and sent it through the proper channels and soon received word that Avnet was more than happy to donate the computers to such a worthy cause.
The computers will be built as part of an Avnet Tech Games contest called AMD Build, Tune and Troubleshoot the Fastest Computer . In this event, student teams will assemble computers using the latest technology all while being timed. At the completion of this game, three of the computers will be sent to Africa to replace the school’s aging desktops. Cornerstone Christian Fellowship, a local church that sponsors the Huruma Children’s home is planning a trip to the country in June and will transport the equipment to the school.
“The teachers depend on this equipment to write curriculum, grade papers and keep in contact with the Kenyan Government,” said Robert Newell, Manager of Engineering, Avnet Technology Solutions. “It is so vital that the school can have functioning computers to make sure this facility can operate smoothly and efficiently.” “The Avnet Tech Games has the resources and some of Arizona’s most intelligent youth to help give back and I’m ecstatic to know that’s exactly what Avnet is going to do.”
