Fundraising through Fitness

Fitness and fundraising seem to go hand in hand these days. With every stride a runner makes, and every revolution of a bicycle wheel, fitness-based fundraising events are a popular way to physically challenge yourself while supporting nonprofit organizations. These events are also a great way for Avnet employees to participate in activities of interest, while supporting the needs of local communities.

Hong-Kong--runners-625The Standard Chartered Marathon has long been recognized as a major sporting event in Hong Kong. Attracting both local citizens and top international runners, it’s one of the chosen fundraising programs supported by Avnet employees, who have participated in the event since 2011.

This year’s unfavorable weather conditions were no match for the 56 employees who ran in the signature event, which raises funds for three important nonprofit organizations. The Avnet team donated more than $8,100 to the three charities tied to the marathon: Seeing is Believing ORBIS, the Hong Kong Anti-Cancer Society and the Hong Kong Paralympic Committee & Sports Association for the Physically Disabled.

For our team in Denmark, it was the third year in a row they pedaled with a purpose and participated in a Team Rynkeby indoor cycling event to raise money to fight childhood cancer.

Team Rynkeby is a Nordic charity project run by the Team Rynkeby Foundation, which raises money to fight childhood cancer through national fundraising campaigns in Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway and the Faroe Islands.

For three hours, 15 employees pedaled with passion for this special charity by manning nine bikes and riding in one-, two- or three-hour shifts.

C-Running-Faire-625Following a company focused weight loss program in Taiwan,  Avnet employees continued to run their way to fitness in the C Running Faire and helped support a local nonprofit with every stride they took.

The C Running Faire has become a popular event with many technology companies because it provides opportunities to network and collaborate with one another, and the event donates five percent of the race registration fees to a local nonprofit organization. This year’s funds supported the Save-a-Pet Foundation, a stray animal welfare organization.

In spite of the challenging weather conditions on the day of the event, Avnet’s 303 representatives consisting of 164 employees completed the race together with their families. The team truly showed Avnet spirit by persevering despite the many hurdles and challenges.

These physical feats show the commitment and dedication Avnet employees have to their communities all over the world. We’re proud of their efforts and hope they inspire you to find a physical way to help fund raise for a nonprofit you care about.
