Avnet supports work-life harmony through a focus on five key elements: physical, financial, career, social and community well-being. When multiple well-being elements come into play through employee-led activities, the impact is even greater for everyone involved. Recently, our team in Hong Kong tied together physical, social and community well-being in their 21km city-wide navigation challenge benefiting a local nonprofit. Through Avnet Cares, employee volunteerism and charitable giving program, employees are empowered to choose the activities and nonprofit organizations they want to support based on the needs of the local community.
From Darkness to Sunrise, a physically demanding city orienteering challenge, was a unique way to bring attention and support to people struggling with emotional issues and raise funds for suicide prevention services. Twenty-five Avnet employees joined together to test their problem solving, communication and cooperation skills in the orienteering game benefiting Samaritan Befrienders Hong Kong, an organization helping people struggling with emotional issues find light at the end of the tunnel by providing suicide prevention services.
Just as in life, the orienteering competition required participants to select the best means of passing through various roadblocks and challenges to find the right path through checkpoints.
The challenge which included 17 checkpoints, began at 9 p.m. and finished before sunrise the next day. The team moved from checkpoint to checkpoint; one required flying a paper airplane, another walking through a pebble-stone trail, running a three-legged race and keeping an egg safe from the starting point to the end.
Though the team was exhausted after finishing the games, they enjoyed the whole process and fostered teamwork through discussing the routes, enhanced social well-being while taking care of teammates and supported the community through their donation of HK$11,300 (US$1,457).
