LED backlight has many advantages over conventional CCFL backlight. Advantages include: no warm up time at low temperatures, lower power consumption, and higher dimming ratio. The LED backlight displays do not require the high-voltage and high-frequency inverter circuits, thus lowering electro-magnetic interference (EMI). LED backlight contains no mercury, make it an environmental friendly option.

Most of the Optrex’s LED backlighting systems provide a minimal of 60,000 hours of lifetime, and the LED rail is field replaceable. Currently available in 5.7”, 6.5”, 8.4”, 12.1”.

Optrex’s LED backlight LCDs were designed for a board range of industrial applications, including test, measuring, and medical equipment, etc. Each of the new modules is compatible with Optrex conventional TFT- LCD products of the same size and resolution. Plus, the optical performance is further improved with latest technologies.

For further product information, please go to: http://www.optrex.com/products/tftled.asp

Optrex will continue enhancing its product performance, and expending the lineup of TFT-LCD modules featuring white LED backlight, to meet the increasing market demand.

The main characteristics of the new modules are as follows:

1. Long-Life and Low-Power White LED Unit
The newly designed white LED unit, outperforms conventional cold-cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFL) with an operating life of 70,000 hours at room temperature (25 degrees Celsius). It reaches an operating life of 60,000 hours at a high temperature of 60 degrees Celsius, and boasts high reliability that is ideal for display devices in industrial equipment exposed to severe environmental conditions. All new modules reduce power consumption by more than 20 percent compared to conventional CCFL backlight systems.

2. Compatibility
Each of the new modules is compatible with NEC LCD Technologies’ conventional standard products of the same size in relation to outer dimensions, position of mounting holes, and screen center. Each also maintains signal compatibility with conventional products. Thus, the modules can be replaced easily without the need to change any of their peripheral appliances.

3. Wide operating temperature range
A wide operating temperature range, from –20 to +70 degrees Celsius, guarantees operation even in extreme conditions. Moreover, the luminance of the white LED backlight performs exceptionally well under low temperatures, even from initial startup.

Flat Panel Displays find their way into almost every industry and all possible applications. As designers leap to take advantage of this technology and design them into products that range from iPods to Mega Digital Signage screens, it becomes inevitable that the off the shelf (OTS) LCDs require modifications. Modifications for sun light view ability, vandal shield, ruggedization etc. One such modification is the need for shield from Electromagnetic Interference. It is important to understand that the need for EMI shielding is not due to the LCD but due to the components in the overall product incorporating the Display emitting radiation. Hence, the need for shielding which can be integrated to the Display.

As the demand for Displays rise, so is the need for Touch Screens that are integrated with the Display for ease of user interface. Display integrated with Touch enables the designer the flexibility of using the integrated unit to have the ability to also shield from EMI. Further, more and more applications demand the need for sunlight readable Display systems. In cases where such systems also incorporate Touch Screens, it becomes the designer’s delight as the Touch Screen can potentailly be used to achieve both optical enhancements and EMI shielding.
