The LCD market is moving away from cumbersome stationary display equipment toward portable (often battery operated) display equipment. Thus the need for displays which consume less power and yet are more rugged to best handle the shock and vibration requirements of a portable equipment . To address the need for more portable, energy efficient, environmentally friendly LCD displays NEC has introduced a variety of displays incorporating LED backlight systems. LED-based LCDs offer distinct advantages over their CCFL counterparts that address most, if not all, of the requirements for portable display equipment. Advantages include:

• Low Voltage displays 
• Low EMI 
• No need for an inverter 
• Reduced power consumption 
• Reduced module thickness and weight 
• High reliability 
• Lower risk of damage to the display due to shock and vibration 
• LED’s are mercury-free and therefore more environmentally friendly than CCFL products
