New Year, New Administration for the US Public Sector

government-techWell, we made it through 2016 and there’s no looking back as 2017 has started off with a bang. With a new Administration we are sure to have another whirlwind year – and hopefully one that accelerates necessary Federal IT mandates.

Like I mentioned before the holidays, we did see some promising movement in 2016 – the MOVE IT Act, the first-ever Federal Cybersecurity Workforce Strategy and 4,388 data center closures top the charts. Now, all eyes are on 2017 as we continue to modernize our systems, reduce our data centers, and head toward the cloud – all while ensuring the highest level of protection for our nation’s data.

And, speaking of protection, the focus on cybersecurity isn’t going anywhere. Cybersecurity Ventures projects $1 trillion will be spent globally on cybersecurity from 2017 to 2021. And, government spending on cybersecurity has increased 14.5 percent annually between FY 2006 and FY 2017 – the budget jumped from $14 billion in 2016 to $19 billion in 2017.

Heigh-ho, heigh-ho it’s off to work we go because the cybersecurity skills demand is here. All hands on deck!

What changes can we expect in 2017?

We’re only a few weeks into 2017 and cybersecurity is already banging down our doors. Foreign hackers are making headlines and a new President is shaking up the landscape. So what does this all mean?

At Avnet, we’re continuing to prioritize the ever-evolving threat of cybersecurity. Last year, we introduced Avnet Government Solutions’ Cyber Protect to help address cyber concerns in a flexible and cost effective manner. Please don’t stop the music because we’re going to continue to march to the beat of this drum throughout 2017 and beyond.

But what else does this year have in store for us?

Cloud, cloud and more cloud. Eighty-two percent of government cloud adopters say they will spend more on cloud in 2017. There will also be an increased emphasis on the Internet of Things (IoT) – how do we better secure our devices while still offering the necessary services? And the hit HBO show Westworld might actually become a reality as artificial intelligence researchers find ways to make robots smarter every day.

These trends are right up our alley. We are putting more focus on data centers, analytics, IoT and mobility to keep our partners a step ahead of the rest so that government agencies have the knowledge and solutions they need during this time of transition and in the years ahead.

Stay with us throughout the year to get the latest on key Federal, state, and local trends, topics and news, as well as how Avnet Government Solutions can help you win more business within the public sector.
